Heaven Can Wait Regatta 2009
Heaven Can Wait 2009
Over 60 yachts competed in the Heaven Can Wait Regatta at RMYC Toronto over the October long weekend in the One Lap Dash (OLD) and 24 hour race (24HR). The fastest yacht in the OLD was the catamaran “Two Tribes”, closely followed by two 18ft skiffs. Local yacht “Stealthy” was the fastest monohull yacht. In the handicap event based on performance handicaps the modified Thompson 7 “Zip” was first closely followed by local yachts “Gregarious“ and “Mitchell Sails and Rigging”. In the 24HR there were a number of withdrawals, no doubt due to the unpleasant conditions prevailing overnight.
At the end of the 24 hour period, in Division 1, the Melges 32 “Rock and Roll “had covered the most distance followed by “Wallop” and “Stealthy”. In the Division 2 event, Young 88 “Pistol Dawn” had covered the most distance followed by “Young n Old” and “Jessily”. In the handicap events run in conjunction, in Division 1 “ the first place went to “Koko” from Gosford Sailing Club and in Division 2 to “Jessily” from Wangi RSL ASC .
The event was a success from a fund raising point of view with about $20,000 being raised for NSW Cancer Council and VMR. This is almost double the amount raised at last year’s event. Organisers are hoping that more yachts will participate next year and that the event will become one of the top events in Australia.
RMYC Toronto yachts Wallop, Mulloka, Young n Old, Emmenar , Gregarious, Di'sy, Merissa V, Forever Young, Serein, Mitchells Sails and Rigging, Kerinda, and Imagine all competed and faired well in the final placings. In the OLD RMYCT gained 5 of the first 8 placings.
