Welcome to Women’s Sailing at RMYC Toronto.
(January 21, 2020)
Have you ever wondered why boats are called She? Apparently the answer from the old sea dogs is. “like a woman, a ship is unpredictable” the other explanation likens us to goddesses who provide a protective role on a boat. Either way sailing is one of the few sports where women can compete on a level playing field and until quite recently a sport which had a low profile. The smaller boats have had great patronage in the past but at the next level with the bigger boats women have struggled.
RMYC at Toronto is committed to supporting the development of women’s sailing .
There are two organisations which may be of interest to women sailors.
We now have three boats owned by women at RMYC who are very keen to recruit and develop their crews.
We have some aspirations
- To see at least one woman crewing on every boat. Thanks guys for supporting us.
- To host an annual female skipper race
- To race a boat with an all female crew
If any of you girls are interested in joining us, not only at a competitive level but also at a social sailing level please get in touch.
A Very Important Announcement - The Heaven Can Wait Charity Dinner
The weekend of February 22 and 23 is the The Heaven Can Wait Charity Sailing Regatta which raises funds for the Hunter Branch of Cancer Council NSW and their Home Help Program – a program that provides domestic support to terminal and recovering cancer patients who are unable to perform their domestic chores because of their condition. A number of boats are looking for crews so let it be known if interested.
The dinner which precedes the race on 21st is dedicating its theme to women in sailing “Its all about the Women”. There will be a panel of high profile guest women who are achievers in sailing including some first time 2019 Hobart competitors. They will be sharing their experiences in an interview with well known Newcastle ABC sports commentator – Helene O’Neil. Find out who the guests are and more by going to HCW Latest News
